Sustainable agroforestry for improved production in the Southern Province of Zambia
PROJECT INFORMATION
Project implementer: Mendel University in Brno
Donor: Czech Development Cooperation
Implementation period: 2024–2026
BASELINE STATE
The Southern province of Zambia is facing extreme drought, with an average annual rainfall of under 800 mm, which affects agricultural production and the living conditions of the population. Agriculture, the main source of livelihood for smallholder farmers, suffers from inefficient practices, climate change, and poorly functioning markets. The pressure on natural resources leads to deforestation, land degradation, and low productivity, which is insufficient for economic development.
To address these issues, the project integrates sustainable agricultural and landscape approaches, enhances drought resilience, and promotes innovation. Emphasis is placed on involving local communities and traditional structures, which are key to the long-term sustainability of the activities.
PROJECT AIM AND DEVELOPMENT ASPECTS
The goal of the project is to implement and expand sustainable agroforestry practices and the associated value and supply chains in the Southern Province of Zambia. The aim of the project is to contribute to reducing deforestation and land degradation, improving the living standards of the population in the Southern Province of Zambia, and enhancing the adaptability of ecosystems to climate change through the implementation and expansion of agroforestry practices and the associated value and supply chains.
ROLE OF HOLISTIC SOLUTIONS S.R.O. IN THE PROJECT
In 2024, the Holistic Solutions team worked to identify water resources in the project sites suitable for subsequent rehabilitation/reconstruction for water retention in the landscape.
